Tagging Method

Each tagging area has been allocated a colour that is specific to them. This is to identify if the two areas deer ever mix.

The Breckland deer group’s colour will be Orange, and the RSPB’s Green.

Each calf is fitted with three tags, a large tag that should be visible at long distance, with the area colour in one ear, and two smaller tags in the other ear in case the large tag is ever lost, denoting area colour and the year that the calf was tagged. All tags are printed with an identification number on one side, and contact details on the other if the individual is ever found dead or culled.

The tagged calves are generally only a few days old, and are found using a team of searchers. When discovered a sheet of material is placed over the calf to keep it calm, they are not moved from the location they are found and as is normal with deer the mother will return later in the day.
